The harp arrived in Veracruz as a tool of the church and got absorbed into son jarocho, the music of the Gulf coast, which is faster and more joyful and more complicated than anything the missionaries had in mind. El Arpa in a jarocho ensemble is deep and resonant and essential - the low voice underneath everything else that makes the whole thing feel true.
