How to Play Lotería: Rules, Setup, and the Traditional Riddles

April 29, 2026 · Lotería T-Shirts

To play Lotería, each player receives one or more tablas — printed boards showing a 4×4 grid of 16 Lotería images. The caller (cantor) shuffles the 54-card deck and draws one card at a time, announcing each with a traditional riddle called a dicho. Players mark matching images on their tablas using beans, coins, or bottle caps. The first player to complete a winning pattern shouts "¡Lotería!" to win the round.

What You Need

  • 1 standard Lotería deck (54 illustrated cards)
  • At least 2 tablas (player boards) — most sets include 10
  • Markers for each player: dried beans, small stones, coins, or bottle caps
  • 2 or more players (best with 4–10)
  • A prize for the winner (optional but traditional)

Setup

  1. Give each player one or more tablas face-up in front of them.
  2. Give each player a pile of markers.
  3. Choose the caller — the person who will draw and announce cards. The caller can also play.
  4. Shuffle the 54-card deck thoroughly.
  5. Decide on the winning pattern before the game starts (see Winning Patterns below).
  6. Decide on stakes — traditionally a small amount per tabla, or any agreed prize.

How to Play, Step by Step

  1. The caller draws the top card from the deck.
  2. Instead of simply naming the card, the caller announces it using a traditional riddle (dicho). For example, for El Gallo (The Rooster): "El que le cantó a San Pedro no le volverá a cantar."
  3. Players look at their tablas. If the announced card appears on their board, they place a marker on it.
  4. The caller draws the next card and repeats.
  5. The first player to complete the winning pattern calls out "¡Lotería!" and wins the round.
  6. Verify the winner's board — the caller reads back through drawn cards to confirm.
  7. Shuffle and play again.

Winning Patterns

Before each round, agree on one of these patterns:

  • Línea (Line): Complete any single row, column, or diagonal — 4 images. Fastest rounds.
  • Cuadro (Square): Complete the four corners of the tabla.
  • L or T shape: Regional variations with specific shape requirements.
  • Tabla Llena (Full Board): Fill all 16 images. Longest rounds, biggest prize.

The Traditional Riddles (Dichos)

The riddles are what make Lotería memorable. A good caller performs them dramatically — with pauses, suspense, and humor. Here are the traditional dichos for some of the most iconic cards:

Tips for a Great Game

  • Be dramatic. The best callers perform the riddles like storytellers. Pause. Let the tension build.
  • Use the riddles. Don't just name the card — that's bingo. The riddles are the whole point.
  • Adjust stakes to the crowd. With kids, use candy. With adults, small coins per round work well.
  • Multiple tablas per player makes the game more exciting and increases the pot.
  • Play outside. Lotería is a quintessential backyard, porch, and festival game.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many players can play Lotería?+

Lotería can be played with 2 players minimum, but it is best with 4 to 10. Most commercial sets include 10 tablas (player boards). Large gatherings can use multiple sets or have players share tablas.

What is a "tabla" in Lotería?+

A tabla is the player's board — a rectangular card showing a 4×4 grid of 16 Lotería images drawn from the 54-card deck. Each tabla has a unique combination of images. Players mark their tablas as cards are announced.

Can children play Lotería?+

Yes — Lotería is traditionally a family game played across all ages. It is excellent for children as it teaches Spanish vocabulary, pattern recognition, and Mexican cultural symbols. Use candy or small prizes to keep young players engaged.

What do you use as markers in Lotería?+

Traditionally, dried pinto beans are used as markers and that's still the most common choice. You can also use coins, bottle caps, small stones, or any small flat object. Some players use themed tokens.

What does "¡Lotería!" mean?+

"¡Lotería!" means "lottery" in Spanish. You shout it when you've completed the winning pattern on your tabla — the equivalent of "Bingo!" in the American game. The first player to call it and have their board verified wins the round.
